John was a retired high school basketball coach who had coaching stints in Britt, Iowa (1961-62); Marmion Academy (1962-64); Rock Falls (1964-1975); and Hillcrest (1975-1981).  He recorded back-to-back 25-4 seasons at Rock Falls in 1973 and 1974, capturing the state regional title both years.  Tierney attended 45 Final Fours from 1973 to 2019.  John played at Upper Iowa University (Fayette, IA) being a two-time first team All-Conference selection, averaging 17.1 points per game in his junior year and 18.3 points per contest as a senior.  Prior to college, Tierney served in the military with the U.S. Army 82 Airborne Division.   John was a Class of 2005 inductee into the Upper Iowa University Hall of Fame, and was elected to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2011.
